Everything about Diabetes Signs

There are great similarities between Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes, and only a health professional will be able to tell you which type of diabetes you are suffering from.  The main difference is that type 1 diabetes involves having very high glucose levels in the bloodstream due to a lack of insulin.  In type 2 diabetes, the body becomes resistant to insulin.  Type 1 diabetes is something people are born with, whereas type 2 is developed over time.

Some of the most common signs of diabetes include:

  • Very frequent urination, particularly during the night.  This is mainly due to the kidneys being unable to cope with the high levels of glucose.  This means that the kidneys try to draw water out of the blood vessels, which then goes to your bladder that will need frequent emptying.
  • Extreme levels of thirst, due to the same malfunction of the kidneys.  As the kidneys draw water from the bloodstream, your body will tell you automatically that you require more fluid intake to make up for this loss of water.
  • Sudden unexplained weight loss – this is mainly common in type 1 diabetes – mainly caused by the fact that the pancreas ceases to produce insulin.  As the body requires energy, it will find it from other sources, such as your body fat and muscle tissue.  Type 2 diabetes develops over time and is more common in people who are obese, which means that weight loss is much less noticeable.
  • Fatigue and weakness, caused by the cells not reacting to insulin anymore, or an insulin deficiency, which means glucose is not absorbed into the bloodstream.  This means that the body has no energy reserves.

Unfortunately, diabetes is usually a lifelong condition that can only be managed with lifestyle changes, dietary changes and usually medication.
